Shipmate article for May 2008

- Darrin Briggs '03

The Intermountain Chapter held another great Army-Navy Football Game party at Jersey's Sports Grill in SLC and we had a fine turnout of about 13 alums (although none of us actually bothered to count ourselves). We are sure several of you were kept inside by the bitter cold and drifting snowstorm that hit us that day; but, for those who made it out, we had a fantastic time watching Navy triumph for the 6th win in a row over Army with a score of 38-3! Since the Army-Navy game, a Chapter Board meeting was held (abbreviated minutes included below) to finalize the schedule of events for the rest of the year leading up to watching and celebrating the 7th win in a row vs. Army in December '08 again at Jersey's Sports Grill.

We are asking other Alumni in the area for feedback on a suggestion made that we create a "networking" list for those moving to the area to have support from those of us already here in finding employment opportunities in the Intermountain West. The thought is to create a list of those willing to be mentors or contacts for others who might be seeking new employment opportunities in UT, ID, WY, & MT. Feedback on this suggestion is welcomed and appreciated and can be sent to [email protected].

Please continue to monitor future issues of Shipmate for updates to the proposed calendar events listed below as the dates, times, and places are firmed-up. We continue to seek increased participation in chapter events and welcome suggestions as to how we can create excitement amongst all of you out there that we are looking forward to having join us in the future. We encourage all alums who have not been active with us to try us out! We are confident that you will find your time with us enjoyable and while all the sea stories may not be "completely" true, at least you'll get to hear some that will make you wonder if they ARE true! We're anxious to have you join us, so please come on out!

Minutes of the Intermountain Board held on February 23, 2008 at 9:00 AM

In attendance: Thom Rossa, ’63, President; Darrin Briggs, ’03, Vice President; Bill Whittlesey, ’59, Secretary;  Jim Clark, ’66; Kevin Dolan, ’71

Thom opened the meeting by explaining the new Chapter Presidents organization.  We will be included in Region 1 which consists of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Utah.  This organization will some chapters to have a little more clout compared to larger chapters. Thom Rossa may end up being our Regional Representative to this organization as he is in the Washington Area on business quite often and finding other volunteers is not easy.  There will be more on this in the future.

Proposed Calendar items:

  • Sat, Dec. 2008 A-N game at Jersey’s Sports Grill.- Bill Whittlesey will arrange.
  • Sat. October 18 Founder’s Day-Navy Birthday event dinnner & speaker.  Cottonwood Club, in Holladay  (Please save this date and plan to attend this wonderful event).

  • Golf - Locally and/or in Spokane, WA Alumni Chapter up near Coeur d’Alene (ID)
  • Summer picnic - with other Service Academies
  • June Mid/Cadet - with Parents' clubs and BGO's

Our golf outing will somewhat depend on the possible picnic date and the date of a Spokane golf outing.  Possible dates (depending on course availability) and scheduling for this year’s golf outing are yet to be determined.  Army will be in the loop for any such event.

We are planning to contact the VA Hospital to determine when and if any of our Chapter members are using the facility and to see if we can be notified when this happens in order to be of assistance during their stay and offer assistance to their families if needed/wanted.

BZ & KUDOS TO THE CLASS OF 2005!
Forgive our spring article dedicated to the class of '05, but I'm stoked with my son DAN '05 graduating this year. This class has conquered more than their share of obstacles. After plebe summer came 9/11 & changed the yard and their lives forever. Remember that winless 2001-football season? The plebes always get blamed. In 2002 they bounced back with a 2-10 season, and an N*. In 2003 they leaped to 8-5 with new coach Johnson "I believe that we will win!", an N*, beat Air Force, & earned the CINC trophy. Their Firstie year exploded with 10-2 including another N* AND beat AF AND an Emerald Bowl win AND the CINC trophy. Records fell like plebes off Herndon. Oh yeah - how about Hurricane Isabel - they recovered, volunteered in Annapolis & missed only one day of classes. All of us grads thank you & wish you all the best in your new careers in the Navy and Marine Corps. Thanks for raising the Bar, '05!

Our chapter had an awesome turnout at A/N in 2004, and we want to keep that interest alive. Our major event this year is to celebrate USNA Founders Day with a crowd-gathering speaker and dinner - probably late summer or fall. We've called Jim Clark '66 out of the bullpen to help us draw an exciting speaker from USNA. The National Alumni Association is working with us as well to make this a huge success. We need you to help us plan & execute - location, advertising, attendees, and events - the works.

BGO: Bob Beer '62 ([email protected]) is the Utah BGO AC and is always looking to recruit Grads as BGO's. For all four states, send me your BGO info and stories - our goal is to support the USNA mission - including recruiting. Bob Beer & Kevin Dolan attended as BGO'sMarch 16th the local USNAPC held its Midn gathering - Bob Beer & Kevin Dolan attended as BGO's.

Current slate of activities for 2005:
· Monthly First Thursday networking Breakfast at Blue Plate Diner - 7-8:00 a.m. 2100 S. 2100 E., SLC - all service academy grads.
· May 5,6 - Chapter presidents meetings at USNA - Kevin Dolan attending
· May 14 - Service Academy Golf - location TBD - contact Chad Christensen '94 ([email protected])
· June 11 - Utah Parents Club Midn/Cadet sendoff picnic
· August/September - Annual summer picnic (with other service academies)
· December 3 - Beat Army party at Iggy's in SLC
· Summer/Fall - Navy Founders Day celebration! This is a big one for us & we're working on a major speaker from USNA - date/location TBD. We'll need help from all corners for this - this is our first.

Send me your updated email address - still the best way to get info to all in our four state region.

"I believe that we will win!" The Mids chant still echoes out here. Congrats from all of us out West to the class of 2005 and all of the Mids for an exciting season.
What a terrific Army/Navy game celebration at Iggy's this year. By all accounts, our best turnout ever - somewhere around 100 from both the Navy and Army side. We counted 17 USNA grads at Iggy's, and I know there are many other celebrations throughout the Intermountain region. (Send any photos and accounts that I can send into Shipmate.)
Here's our group photo taken right before the game started (left-right, front-back)

Shipmate article submitted for July/August '03 issue

Hello, Shipmates,

It's been a beautiful summer here in the West. Even with the busy summer, there's always news about our local alumni. As I write this, we're just getting pics from the Utah Parents' Club summer sendoff picnic held June 14 in Sandy, UT. The USNA club combined with the USMA club for a good picnic at a local park. We managed to find three grads attending. Bob Beer '62 is the new BGO Area coordinator. We also found Gerry Imai '81 and Kevin Dolan '71 attending. Dan Wilcox '04 also came down from Idaho with his Mother for the picnic. We're working well with the Utah Parents' Club and now need to expand our events with the Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho clubs as well.

We have a new member for our chapter. J. D. Hodapp, Jr. '39 called me this spring about joining. J.D. moved to Great Falls, MT and called with much good info about his career. He sent a good photo from 1956 before heading to Taiwan and a one-page bio. Looks like J.D. was not only skipper of two destroyers (USS Hall DD 583 and USS Lofberg DD 759), but also was the technical adviser to author C. S. Forester. J.D. lives now in Great Falls, MT with his wife Shura ("Retired but not Tired"). Welcome aboard, J.D. and Shura.

Shipmate article submitted for June issue
It's been a great spring for skiing - now back to the drought. By now we've had our May Golf outing - Thanks to Gerry Imai '81 for organizing. In June we'll work with the Utah Parents Club to send off any candidates for Plebe summer. Bob Beer '62 and his BGO team have been stepping up the recruiting effort throughout Utah - including a Service Academy night in St. George on April 24th.
Check with me regarding luncheons for June & August - we're setting up regular places and times throughout the year.
I received an email from P.J. Falten '70 - just back from active duty someplace where it's very warm. PJ says that he's doing well - cool as ever. Stay healthy, PJ!

PJ Falten '70 in chem gear!

This letter also bears sad news about one of our '62 grads: Richard Luker '62 passed away Sunday, March 23. Several of us were able to attend the memorial service. We'll miss 'Lucky' Luker & certainly send our condolences to his wife Kerstin. I'll include here a portion of a note that was circulated by Gregg Bambo, one of Richard's Naval Aviation squadron mates:

"Richard Luker, former Western Airlines pilot has passed away on this day, March 23, ending a valiant and unprecedented year long fight against pancreatic cancer. Richard lived life to the fullest; orphan,
Naval Academy graduate, Vietnam Navy Distinguished Flying Cross hero, Navy attack squadron commander, Western Airlines Algerian hi-jack crew volunteer, previous cancer (survivor),
husband and loving father."

Shipmate article submitted for May Issue
We've had a busy winter. The local Alumni, BGO's and the USNA Parents' club have been working together to present two important events:

The USNA Utah Parents Club, headed by Lisa Dolan, organized the first event, which took place on 27 February at Juan Diego H. S. This was an all Service Academy Information Night for all Utah high schools, counselors, students, and parents. The event was a huge success - over 200 attendees plus reps from USNA, USMA, USMMA, USCGA, and USAFA. Also represented were the Utah congressional offices. Bob Beer '62, Alberto Alberto '88, and Kevin Dolan '71 were present from the alumni.
Many thanks to Juan Diego H. S., USNA parents, BGO's, and USNA alumni for putting this all together.

==èintermtn1.jpg - Bob Beer '62 addressing a full house at the Service Academy Night ç==

==èintermtn2.jpg Alberto Alberto '88 meeting with interested students at Service Academy Nightç==

The second event was the annual midshipmen gathering, sponsoring by the USNA Parents' Club and the Inter Mountain chapter of alumni. This was also successful both because of several excellent candidates, and also because there were several mids attending home on leave and visiting the U of Utah for a science conference. Alumni attending included Bob Beer '62, Jake Bowan '02, and Kevin Dolan '71. Mids attending included: J.C. Davis '04, Peter Buryk '03, Matt Isenhower '03, Cole Woodman '05, Melissa Jolley '04,

May - Army/Navy golfing event
May - USNAAA Chapter Pres.- Annapolis

Winter 2003 - Still celebrating Navy over Army

The USNA Intermountain Chapter and Navy crowd joined with the West Pointers for our annual celebration at Iggy's Sports Grill in Salt Lake City - Great turnout this year. We held our board meeting prior to the game - also a good turnout with new members jumping in to help out.
Thanks to Thom Rossa '63 for volunteering to take the Treasurer's baton from Jim Carolan.
And Of course it's always good to see Jim Clark '66- President Emeritus - in between his many road trips.

The Senior Navy grad attending was a fit looking CDR Phil Thom '49 and his wife. Phil is also a former physics prof at USNA. The junior grad was USAF 2nd Lt. Jake Bowan '02, (captain of the '01 football squad) and his wife Saeeda. Jake brought some of his AFA friends out to watch Navy's steamrolling event.
As usual, we invited the local USNA parents' club for the big event. Utah parents' club attendees included Rich & Pam Dropek, Jackie Cox - a long time BGO, and Lisa Dolan - current Utah Parents' club president.
Navy grads dropped in throughout the day - including LCDR Alberto Alberto '88, stopping by on his drill weekend. Dick Peterson '81 made it to Iggy's with his wife Lois and kids. We also saw Jill Richards '94 here at Iggy's for the first time. Jill is a former ROTC instructor at the U of U.
Thanks again to Julian Salas for another extra donation to the Chapter fund - always needed.
My apologies to anyone that I missed acknowledging at the Army/Navy game.

  • Navy Founders day celebration in October

  • Active support for the USNA recruiting effort via the Blue and Gold Officer program
  • Continued activities with the West Point, USAF, and Coast Guard communities
  • Continued support of the local USNA parents' clubs activities

Upcoming Intermountain events (check our website for the updated calendar):

  • February - Ski days with Army
  • February or March - Military night - sponsored by Utah Parents' Club
  • March - Parents' club gathering for candidates/mids
  • May - golfing with other services
  • May - USNAAA Chapter Pres., Trustee meeting - Annapolis
  • June - Parents club candidate sendoff picnic

Also, for all of you in Northern Idaho, Kenny Moore '66 ([email protected]) is starting up another chapter for that area.
Stay healthy and bring some snow out here to us diehard skiers - it's still the greatest snow on earth - just not very much of it.
